TPU (Tanks n Planes Unlimited)

Gamespy problems resolved

The Gamespy server problems appear to have been resolved. In-game Internet server browsing works normally. No word from Gamespy on what the problem was.

Gamespy problems

Gamespy is apparently having problems since moving or upgrading some servers on August 26. This is affecting all multiplayer games that use Gamespy as a conduit for server browsing, regardless of where the server is hosted.

Gamespy has said nothing official about this on their web site, but there is some discussion on the Gamespy forums.

The problems are intermittent. If you are trying to join a game on TPU, you may not even be able to see the list of Internet servers in the in-game browser; the game seems to hang when you click the INTERNET button. If you wait long enough, the server list may appear but the game will still be unresponsive.

If you can get to point where you can click the JOIN SERVER button, click it and enter the TPU server address directly: 174.6.245.193. That should work.

However, there are also reports that once you join a game, you may be dropped from the server at any time or between maps.

UPDATE: On the recommendation of a commenter, I finally relented and installed XFire. I confirmed that joining TPU from XFire works fine even with Gamespy messed up. Although there aren't likely to be many other players while these problems persist. My XFire username is SquareBracket.

New versions of Stalingrad and Salerno

Once again thanks to Ryda and Mojo, we have new versions of these two maps.

Stalingrad is now tankless, like Berlin, so it's an infantry battle.

Here's the complete rundown:

Stalingrad:

  • added more MGs some in 2nd and 3rd levels of buildings
  • added a few AA guns
  • removed all tanks
  • added cars and APCs
  • added artillery to both sides
  • artillery = katyusha/wespe
  • all 5 cars/jeeps are in this map
  • all 3 APCs are in this map

Salerno:

  • replaced one fighter plane on both sides with a medium bomber
  • added katyushas
  • added kettenkrads
  • replaced cars/jeeps with sherman/panzeriv

New Iwo Jima

Today it's a new version of Iwo Jima, thanks to DarkRyda.

Here's what's new:
- added machine guns to ALL key locations
- added AA guns all over the map, some on top of buildings
- added more cars/jeeps
- added 9 defense guns
- changed Corsair to Mustang on the island
- added a new fighter plane to the island, 1 on the runway and 1 on top of the hill at the airfield
- the new fighter plane is a BF109/Spitfire
- added a tank and a car to the center of the map
- added artillery to both sides of the map
- the new artillery is Katyusha/Wespe
- added PT boats
- added ships to both sides
- axis fleet is now 1 battleship and 4 destroyers
- allied fleet is now 1 carrier, 1 battleship and 3 destroyers

It's wild and it's dangerous and it has a whole new feel. Nice!

New Tobruk

There's a new version of Tobruk on TPU. This one is also the work of DarkRyda and TenaciousMojo. It includes the following:
- added planes to Axis side (BF109/Stuka)
- added planes to Allied side (Mustang/B17)
- (note: bots do not fly the planes)
- added AA guns to all sand bag rings and some on top of buildings
- added machineguns in key locations all over the map
- added heavy tank and car to center flag
- added artillery to small abandoned bunker at south of map
- added artillery and a car at the abandoned outpost on the north side of map
- added 3 cars to both main bases

New Market Garden and Battle of Britain

Again thanks to the creative efforts of DarkRyda and TenaciousMojo, new versions of Battle of Britain and Market Garden are now running on TPU.

The new Market Garden includes planes for the Axis, a bomber for the Allies, more AA emplacements, more variety in tanks and planes and a few cars.

The new Battle of Britain has some major tweaks to the ticket countdown for the Allies: destroying the factory doesn't count down as fast and the radar stations respawn (at different rates). Also there's more variety in planes and a few tanks.

New Husky, more tweaks for Wake

Thanks to DarkRyda and TenaciousMojo, TPU has a new version of Husky. It has some new tank spawns and other tank-related changes, an Allied aircraft carrier, and a few more surprises.

Wake has a few more machine gun emplacements, and if the Allies lose all the island spawnpoints, they can still attack from their ships.

Enjoy!

TPU server information

Tanks 'n Planes Unlimited (TPU) is a co-op Battlefield 1942 server that runs server-side-modded maps with increased tank and plane spawns.

TPU was founded on November 10, 2007, when the name was adopted for the server, at the suggestion of Jesse Barker.

The TPU server lives in Burnaby, BC, part of greater Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

The computer hosting TPU is named Foghorn, after the Looney Tunes rooster. It runs 64-bit Ubuntu 14.04 Linux, has 8 GB of RAM and an Intel Core i7 3770K 3.5GHz CPU.

Foghorn processes TPU stats nightly at 3am PST, uploading them to the jdrgaming site, which is also hosted on Foghorn.

And here's Foghorn, in all his glory...

Ticket ratio

By popular demand, the ticket ratio has been bumped up from 225 to 300. As always, feedback welcome. If there are particular maps where this new ratio is just too high, we may consider tweaking those maps rather than going back to a smaller overall ticket ratio.
