It's entirely possible that they are in league with someone who's trying to force hardware changes on the industry for their own gain. It's an expensive gamble if it is, but given that five minutes after any sort of release these days, everyone suddenly turns up with their own version of the given product or idea (as opposed to something original and of their own design), it would come as no surprise that there's something in it. Ultimately these firms are getting bigger by the year, their customer base caring less, and their supporters and partners in advertising and similar fields all standing to make millions from such immediately huge expansion, so there's never any shortage of cash or self-interest. Governments stand to make millions from taxes, so there will be little or no policing of such activity, right up until someone gets hurt (which is never, unless you're a small developer who's been put out of business, but at this point, nobody important enough is going to care).

You only have to look at the mess Games Workshop Corporate made of the tabletop game industry, and don't get me started on Sports.
