Not a dumb question at all. I've been thinking about how I would get the password to people, and that's a viable option. If someone wants to cause problems for the server and they figure out that the password is available to registered users, and they register on the site, I'll have a record of them. On the other hand, they would almost certainly use a fake name, spoofed or proxied IP address and throwaway email address, so actually that wouldn't be all that useful. It would probably be easier to have a link on this site to sign up for the password. I would maintain a list of people with the password and make sure they get updated whenever the password changes.
