You're right about the terms of service: nobody ever reads them. A while back a software developer put a note at the bottom of their ToS offering a free gift to anyone who bothered to read down that far; almost nobody got that gift. But as long as the terms were mostly empty legal bluster, it was no big deal; this Origin thing is different.

Steam is similar in some ways, but they specifically state that their access to your computer is limited to files and settings related to Steam and Steam games. I don't really have a problem with that. Also, unlike the new Ubisoft DRM, I can play Steam games without an Internet connection.
