Minecraft page retired
I've decided to (mostly) retire this page, for a number of reasons. It's actually more difficult to stay on top of Minecraft releases and updates now than when I started documenting them here. Release announcements are buried on the main minecraft.net page. There's no RSS feed. The assumption seems to be that anyone who plays Minecraft will quickly learn about any new version because their client will prompt them to install it. But of course this is less useful for Minecraft server admins like myself. Complicating things even further, there are now so many different variants of Minecraft, that it's difficult to know which I should concentrate on. In any case, the official Minecraft wiki does a good job of documenting client and launcher versions.
Minecraft resources
For current information about Minecraft, you can try the following:
- Official Minecraft web site (minecraft.net)
- Official download page
- Wiki - a huge amount of extremely useful information
- Version history - an excellent resource
- Minecraft Support Center - shows the status of Minecraft core servers and provides basic help for the game
- Official forums - a good place to look for help from other players, but getting a response from Mojang is unlikely
- Minecraft news forum - sometimes contains information about upcoming changes to Minecraft.
- Minecraft News - a list of Minecraft releases, but posts are not dated and contain very little useful information; no distinction is made between client and server; and it's not being updated
- Official Mojang blog - occasionally useful, often incomplete information buried in noise about snapshots and other games
