Epic pulls the plug on master servers

This is one of the most exceptional constructive rants I've read in a very long time, and on a subject close to my heart as I've watched the steady decline of standards in internet gaming due to corporate mismanagement for the last two decades. I myself recall back then game servers being owned almost exclusively by private individuals who maintained high standards in order to bring the best players to their server, paying for the service themselves and only asking for donations, and never expecting anything other than good game play and behaviour, thus garnering them excellent reputations across the internet.

Then, with the advent of the wider availability of improved internet connection, many new (and web-inexperienced) nations were brought onto the internet, and game companies very quickly realised that they could cash in on large audiences by running their own in-house servers with only a few basic rules of "netiquette", and thereby we ended up with monstrous corporate disasters with poor ping and few or no rules at all. As a consequence armies of screeching rabble swamped decent servers, leaving the privately owned ones to close down due to the ridiculous demands of the new generation of spoilt howling children who shouldn't be on there in the first place, not because of adult outrage, but because of laws ignored by irresponsible and ignorant parents who think the corporation will look after their little darlings whilst they're online, with tragic consequences for society.

Right, that's me off my soap box! It does however do me good to see the likes of JDR (and others) doing their level best to maintain quality servers for well-behaved players looking for a bit of fun, which is what it was all about in the first place. Well done to our host for keeping your finger on the pulse.
